You might need to dispose of different waste from your home or business. Fortunately, there are dumpsters for rent which you can hire depending on the duration of the project. The waste you want to dispose of will affect the renting price, and the amount of waste will determine the appropriate size of dumpster to use. While there are different types of garbage, disposal laws determine which waste can go into a dumpster and which cannot.

Allowed Waste

You are free to dump non-hazardous waste in a dumpster. Non-hazardous waste includes household junk that you regularly dispose of in your trash bin, like blankets, toys, and other non-organic stuff. Yard waste like wood also goes into the dumpster. However, some counties have limits on the amount of waste you can dump.

If you are planning a renovation, waste from construction like drywall can go into the dumpster. Since renovation waste is heavy, always order a heavy-duty dumpster with a high capacity to avoid additional expenses. It is also allowed to dump roofing and concrete in dumpsters. If you have large quantities of concrete you would like to dispose of, consider getting a dumpster tailored for concrete or heavy debris.

Empty aerosol cans, like cooking spray cans, are safe to dump, provided they are empty. Aerosol cans with any content are flammable and risk an explosion. So, double-check to ensure they are empty before dumping. Drained appliances are also safe to dump as long as they are drained before disposal. Appliances contain some hazardous liquid that needs to be drained out before disposal.

Waste You Shouldn't Dispose of in a Dumpster

Some wastes pose environmental risks, and thus, shouldn't be disposed of in dumpsters. Any hazardous waste like flammable cans, jerricans, or toxic materials like asbestos shouldn't be disposed of in a dumpster. Also, avoid dumping batteries, hot water tanks, and electronics in dumpsters.

Batteries have chemicals that leak and are harmful to the environment. There are numerous recycling centers where lithium batteries can be recycled to avoid them landing in landfills. Hot water tanks are hazardous because they collect and accumulate harmful landfill gases.

As for electronic waste, although some states allow disposing of electronics in landfills, there are e-waste recycling companies that can recycle the electronics, and disposing of them could attract extra charges.

There are laws on waste disposal for every state which you should follow to avoid legal problems. If you are unsure of the disposal laws in your state, check with your local government office before getting a dumpster for rent.
